Since the Chinese occupation in 1960 in Tibet, many different qualified lamas from Tibetan Buddhist School have fled towards India, Nepal and Bhutan. The main reason that they decided to leave Tibet was to keep their precious Dharma and practice, which is the source of the momentary happiness and ultimate happiness in our lives.
Since Chinese communism did not let monks to practice their dharma and warned them if they do so; they would be punished and sentence to death.
Therefore, in India, Nepal and Bhutan, they are free to perform their ritual puja and keep the dharma active as it was in Tibet before Chinese occupation, hence those masters have established many monasteries, where interested follower can study the teaching of dharma and practice the path of their lineage masters to attain enlightened state.
Among them, this monastery has been keeping true practice of the religion of Bon under the guidance of Ven. Menri Khenrab So Nyi Pa Chenpo Ku Dun Sherap Lodro Rinpoche, and Ven. Menri Yongzin Lopon Sangye Tenzin Rinpoche, and Ven. Menri Yongzin Lopon Tenzin Namdak Rinpoche.
With the help from Red Cross in 1960, we build up DHOR PATAN NOR ZIN LING a settlement camp for ordinary Tibetan people and TASHI GE GYE THATEN LING for Tibetan monks and Rinpoches.
Although most of the people who live in this Tibetan settlement camp are “BONPO”, who follow the path of BON RELIGION, but still there are people who follows other four Tibetan Buddhist school such as: Kagyud School, Ningma School, Sakya School and Geluk School.
We developed our community under the help from Red Cross and three Venerable Rinpoches. Under the help from red cross- we received hospital building, School, and handcraft centre.
Those three Venerable Rinpoches kindly appointed Lama Tsultrim Nyima Rinpoche as abbot of the monastery who has ability to look after both monastery and settlement camp.
Lama Tsultrim Nyima Rinpoche, who with his loving kindness and compassion, his ceaseless effort, he did very much care and helped without discriminating for our settlement and monastery habitant. He especially took care very much for old age people, poor family children and orphans such as helping to send school, paying for hospital bills and so on.
After sometimes, he passed away and the result brings that our settlement and monastery could not manage well as he was alive. It was big lost for the monastery and settlement camp which also consequence many difficulties and trouble arise because of his absence.
Then after sometimes, three rinpoches appointed Ven. Khenpo Sonam Gyaltsen Rinpoche as the abbot of the Monastery and he took his responsible very well by managing monastery and helping tibetan refugee in settlement camp but unfortunately he also died in 1994.
After that there was about two years gap to find appropriate Abbot for the monastery and on 25th of May-in 1996-Ven. Menri Khenrap Sosumpa Chenpo Lungtok Tenpe Nyima Rinpoche,
Ven. Yongzin Lobpon Tenzin Namdk Rinpoche, both senior members from Monastery and Settlement camp appointed to Geshe Tenzin Dargye as the abbot of the Tashi Gegyes Thaten Ling Monastery. Geshe Tenzin Dargye could not refuse their proposal although he do not have big ability and talented enough to take the huge responsibility but heI said himself he will try my best for sake of monastery and settlement camp people. After that, He also received the official recognition letter from the Tibetan Government in exile as abbot of the monastery.
Since then, He is taking his responsibility to look after both monastery and settlement camp with full of pure motivation and diligently. In 1998, under the help from the local disciples and foreign country disciples, the monastery’s main hall was renovated. They had also built up another new hall and new electric system for the monastery. For the Tibetan settlement camp, they are still helping for old age people to provide their necessity, and poor family’s children, and orphans to send them school, little financial help for poor family etc.
